1600 anni fa moriva San Gerolamo, certamente una figura della vita 
della Chiesa di Gesù Cristo che moltissimo ha fatto per la conoscenze 
delle Scritture ebraiche e cristiane. Abbiamo molti motivi di 
gratitudine nei suoi confronti perché, pur con strumenti scientifici 
propri dell’epoca e con una conoscenza delle lingue bibliche limitata, 
ha realizzato quell’opera formidabile che è stata la traduzione latina 
dell’Antico/Primo e Nuovo Testamento che per molti secoli è stata un 
punto di riferimento imprescindibile per la tradizione ecclesiastica. 
Gerolamo ha fatto egli errori? A partire da talune sue inadeguatezze 
ci sono stati appesantimenti interpretativi che hanno gravato sulla 
lettura della Bibbia nei secoli successivi? Certamente, ma sarebbe 
anacronistico giudicare un passato lontano con le categorie 
scientifiche di vari secoli dopo. Quello che conta appare, più che 
mai, in particolare per chi cerca di essere cristiano, la necessità di 
prendere sul serio la frase celeberrima di Gerolamo: “L’ignoranza 
delle Scritture e ignoranza di Cristo”. Troppe persone pensano che si 
possa essere cristiani senza una seria, non tecnicistica o 
fondamentalistica, seria formazione biblica. La Federazione Biblica 
Cattolica, l’Alleanza Biblica Universale e tutte le istituzioni ad 
esse collegate e, con le differenze del caso, le issituzioni 
accademiche bibliche e teologiche operano, tra luci e ombre, tra alti 
e bassi, per combattere le forme di ignoranza appena citate e occorre 
dedicare il massimo di risorse e di determinazione perché tale “lotta” 
possa continuare e aumentare con tutta l’intelligenza e la passione 
possibili. Chiunque può dare il suo contributo in proposito. Auguri 
cordialissimi, in questa giornata, a tutte e a tutti coloro che 
tentano di approfondire la conoscenza esistenziale delle Scritture 
ebraiche e cristiane per il bene loro, della Chiesa di Gesù Cristo e 
di tutta l’umanità!

Il y a 1600 ans, saint Jérôme est mort, certainement une figure de la 
vie de l’Église de Jésus-Christ qui a beaucoup fait pour la 
connaissance des Écritures hébraïques et chrétiennes. Nous avons de 
nombreuses raisons de gratitude à son égard car, même avec des 
instruments scientifiques de l’époque et avec une connaissance limitée 
des langues bibliques, il a créé cette œuvre formidable qui a été la 
traduction latine de l’Ancien / Premier et du Nouveau Testament qui 
pour beaucoup de siècles, il a été un point de référence essentiel 
pour la tradition ecclésiastique. Jérôme a-t-il fait des erreurs? À 
partir de certaines de ses insuffisances, y a-t-il eu des charges 
d’interprétation qui ont pesé sur la lecture de la Bible dans les 
siècles suivants? Certes, mais il serait anachronique de juger d’un 
passé lointain avec les catégories scientifiques de plusieurs siècles 
plus tard. Ce qui compte plus que jamais, c’est surtout pour ceux qui 
cherchent à être chrétiens, la nécessité de prendre au sérieux la 
célèbre phrase de Jérôme: “Ignorance des Écritures est ignorance du 
Christ”. Trop de gens pensent qu’on peut être chrétien sans une 
formation biblique sérieuse, non technique ou fondamentaliste. La 
Fédération Biblique Catholique, l’Alliance Biblique Universelle et 
toutes les institutions qui leur sont liées et, avec les différences 
de cas, les institutions académiques bibliques et théologiques 
opèrent, entre lumières et ombres, entre hauts et bas, pour combattre 
au maximum les formes d’ignorance mentionnées. Il est nécessaire de 
consacrer le maximum de ressources et de détermination pour que cette 
«lutte» puisse continuer et s’accroître avec toute l’intelligence et 
la passion possibles. Tout le monde peut contribuer à cet égard. 
Salutations cordiales, en ce jour, à tous et à tous ceux qui essayent 
d’approfondir leur connaissance existentielle des Écritures juives et 
chrétiennes pour leur bien, l’Église de Jésus-Christ et toute 
l’humanité!

Church of Jesus Christ who did a lot for the knowledge of the Hebrew 
and Christian Scriptures. We have many reasons for gratitude towards 
him because, even with scientific instruments of the time and with a 
limited knowledge of biblical languages, he created that formidable 
work which was the Latin translation of the Old / First and New 
Testament which for many centuries it has been an essential point of 
reference for the ecclesiastical tradition. Did Jerome make mistakes? 
Starting from some of its inadequacies, were there interpretative 
burdens that weighed on the reading of the Bible in the following 
centuries? Certainly, but it would be anachronistic to judge a distant 
past with the scientific categories of several centuries later. What 
matters is, more than ever, especially for those seeking to be 
Christian, the need to take seriously the famous phrase of Jerome: 
“Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ”. Too many people 
think that one can be a Christian without serious, non-technical or 
fundamentalistic, serious biblical training. The Catholic Biblical 
Federation, the Universal Biblical Alliance and all the institutions 
connected to them and, with the differences of the case, the biblical 
and theological academic institutions operate, between lights and 
shadows, between ups and downs, to combat the forms of ignorance as 
soon as possible mentioned. It is necessary to dedicate the maximum of 
resources and determination so that this “struggle” can continue and 
increase with all the intelligence and passion possible. Anyone can
